You can get a NIF by bringing your passport and proof of address to your local tax office (called “Finanças”). If you are not yet a registered resident, provide a documentation of your address in Portugal or your home country.
If you live outside of the European Union or the European Economic Area, you must supply the name of a Portuguese attorney, friend, family member, or accountant who can speak with tax officials on your behalf.
